Stress activates. This deactivates. A 20-minute protocol that uses intermittent stimulation to help your nervous system stop running and start recovering.
In a 2025 randomised crossover study, participants receiving taVNS at this frequency showed no increase in perceived stress during a laboratory stressor, while the sham group's stress levels rose significantly. The protocol also preserved frontal alpha and theta power -- the EEG signatures of a calm, focused brain.
Calm is the first Vagal Tone to use duty cycling -- 60 seconds on, 60 seconds off. This mirrors the protocol used in the EEG stress study and may help avoid neural habituation, keeping the signal fresh across the full 20 minutes.
Research suggests that vagus nerve stimulation at these parameters improves the coordination between your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Not just calmer -- better regulated.
Morning before a demanding day. After work to switch off. Before a difficult conversation. Calm is designed for daytime use -- whenever stress is the thing you are working on.
Calm is for anyone who wants a dedicated stress-management protocol grounded in published research on how vagus nerve stimulation affects the stress response.
Your vagus nerve responds differently to different stimulation patterns. Just as a single medicine can't treat every condition, a single stimulation protocol can't optimise every function. That's why Vagal devices support multiple Tones -- each one precisely tuned for a different outcome.
Low frequencies tend to promote calm and relaxation. Higher frequencies can target gut function and inflammation. The right frequency depends on what you're trying to achieve.
The shape and width of each electrical pulse affects how nerve fibres respond. Narrower pulses are gentler. Wider pulses recruit more nerve fibres. Different goals need different pulse profiles.
Stress, recovery, digestion, sleep -- your body has different needs at different times. A device limited to one protocol can't adapt with you. Tones let you match stimulation to the moment.
No cables. No complicated setup. Purchase, sync, stimulate.
Buy a Tone here. It appears instantly in your Vagal Tones app account.
Open the app, connect via USB or Bluetooth, and transfer the Tone to your stimulator.
Select your new Tone on the device and begin your session. That's it.
Using Tones with Buddy
Buddy holds three Tones at a time and lists them on its screen. Once this Tone is loaded, switching to it takes a second, and you never need your phone to do it.
Sync the Tone to Buddy in the Vagal Tones app. You decide which three Tones Buddy carries.
Push the joystick up or down to move through your Tones.
Push the joystick in. Buddy goes straight to the session timer, ready to start.

Slow, soothing stimulation for sensitive nerves. Eases you into parasympathetic calm.
The foundation tone. General autonomic rebalancing and daily nervous system tuning.
Targets the gut-brain axis. A faster pulse that encourages gut motility.
Shift from fight-or-flight back to rest-and-digest after exercise.
A 20-minute pre-sleep protocol at 20 Hz. Shifts your nervous system from alert to at ease.
Choose the frequency, pulse width and timing. Built to order.
Everything you need to know about Vagal Tones
Tones are digital products delivered instantly after purchase - there is nothing to ship. Once you complete checkout, the tone is immediately available in your app (called Vagal Tones on iOS and Vagally Better on Android).
Because tones are digital and delivered instantly, they are non-refundable once downloaded. Please check device compatibility before purchasing.
Yes. The Bespoke Tone is built to order: you choose the frequency (1 to 100 Hz), the pulse width and the timing (1 to 60 minutes, continuous or cycled). If you have a specific setting in mind - from a research paper, a clinician's recommendation or your own preference - this is the tone for you. It works with Vagal Buddy and Vagal Oh!, and it replaces the older My Tone.
If you own the Research Edition, you also get access to the Tone Portal at vagal.com/portal, which gives even more granular control over pulse parameters.
No. Your tVNS Stimulator works perfectly well with its built-in default tone. The default protocol covers general vagus nerve stimulation and is what most customers use day to day.
Additional tones are for people who want to experiment with different frequencies or target specific wellness goals. They are entirely optional and your stimulator will continue to work without them.
After purchasing a tone, open the app on your phone (called Vagal Tones on iOS and Vagally Better on Android) and connect to your stimulator via Bluetooth. The new tone will appear in your library ready to load. Tap the tone, then tap Load - the transfer takes a few seconds.
Once loaded, the tone stays on your device. You do not need your phone or the app during stimulation sessions. You can switch between loaded tones at any time.
